THE BREAKERS AND THE SEA

Like men clashing in battle
Rattles the foam sword of sea
Upon the breakers striking
The bloodless fight is endless.
The rocks they shed the sea spray
Uncaring as yesterday.
Father, son and grandson
Will many pass away
And the rock will yield a chip.
And the sea will shout a cheer.
Men will always fight and win.
Men will always fight and lose.
Standard on a foreign shore
Taken there and back again.
Father loses life and land.
Son will take it back again.
So men wage the living war.
Shore against the endless sea.
Foam sword breaking on the rock
Wins a pebble soon forgot.
